We offer classes in Gracie Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Jeet Kune Do, Mokuraiken Kempo, Filipino Kali, Muay Thai Kickboxing for men, women and kids!
We have classes in the morning, afternoon and evening as well as on the weekends. While we have numerous individuals and instructors training for tournaments our emphasis is and always will be on individual self defense for the street. Regardless of the martial arts system you participate in at the 54th Street Gym or whether you are a man, woman or child our focus for training is to develop and maintain solid fundamental self defense skills that can be applied in a real life self defense situation.
We are not an MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) school training for the ring although many of the techniques and principles are applicable to the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) and many of the people training in the gym are or have competed in the UFC and you will train just like a UFC fighter would in many respects but with the result of going home instead of going to the hospital. We are not a traditional karate school in which tournament or point techniques are emphasized although we do develop technique, speed, power and athletic prowess. We are not a traditional sport jujitsu school in which tournament or sport jujitsu is emphasized although many of our students and instructors compete in submission or jujitsu tournaments.
We believe it is important to retain the REAL fighting aspects of the martial arts, lest it devolve into a game with little relation to the martial arts system that was originally developed and its original purpose for doing so. Even the UFC is a “game” (albeit a very painful one if you participate) that has been modified and changed over the years to allow for a more sportive aspect such as the removal of headbutts and inclusion of timed rounds with judges who “score” the fight to determine the winner. In a real street fight there are no rules, there is no judge to determine who had a better round and there is no referee to stop the fight.
But we also believe that by training in a sport or sport minded environment, in addition to learning specific techniques, you are developing athletic attributes: strength, balance, agility, speed and thinking in stressful situations (like a training partner trying their best to strangle you!). You ARE developing excellent tools to defend yourself in as close to a real fighting scenario as you can get without actually being in a real fight. Basically it is the closest we can come to being in personal combat without actually being in personal combat.
Grandmaster Helio Gracie himself believed that the most important part of learning jiu-jitsu was for a smaller, weaker opponent to be able to defend themselves against a larger attacker. The focus is on survival. You may not “win” the fight but the goal is to survive the fight.
That being said we are traditional in regard to the training, self discipline, integrity, self control, loyalty, perseverance, patience, resilience, fighting spirit, physical and emotional balance, and respect for your fellow training partners but in a non traditional or non classical approach to training. We do not claim to be any better than any other martial arts school or gym out there but we do believe that we offer a viable alternative to what is being taught today.
